The Conversation has a great story about building a telescope in the coldest place on earth – Russia’s Vostok station in Antarctica, where temperatures have hit  -89.2C, the lowest reading ever obtained on earth.

 

The BBC has a story on how Google is now allowing users to create and share their own Street Views – using either a DSLR camera or Android phone.

 

Garnter has released it’s annual ‘hype cycle’ which charts the hottest tech, and how it fits into socety’s perception and use. There are a few interesting technologies making the list this year, but perhaps the most interesting is that Location Intelligence is near the ‘plateau of productivity.’

 

Geospatial World’s image of the week is a Wikimedia maps that shows the different writing systems used across the world.

 

The All Points Blog alerts readers that Google has hired Blaise Aguera y Arcas from Microsoft, where he had helped develop Microsoft’s Bing Maps and worked on augmented reality and Photosynth.

 

Literary buffs will appreciate this interactive map of Odysseus’ 10-year journey in Homer’s Odyssey, posted over at Open Culture.

 

Additionally, history buffs will appreciate this map, posted by Google Maps Mania, which shows off the spread of printing – from Gutenberg through to today.
