In news sure to warm your weary, post-long-weekend heart, The Sun has a story where an owner devised a way to track his kitty’s whereabouts, in order to find out why he was getting so plump on his trips around the neighbourhood. I particularly love seeing the mapped adventures that Yollo enjoyed.
In much more serious news: the idea the hate speech proliferates before conflict has led to a new idea from the Sentinel Project, which analyses social networks for rising incidents of hate speech and maps them, in an attempt to predict conflict. It’s an interesting, ambitious, and worthy project, and Foreign Policy has an enjoyable piece on it.
The new season of Doctor Who has started screening, and Flick Filosopher has a post where all the incidents of nasty alien (of the space variety) activity has occurred in London over the long history of the series. A must for fans of the Doctor.
And, with April Fool’s happening last Monday, Google Maps got in on the spirit with its ‘treasure map’ layer. Google Maps Mania has some more info, as well as a link to a ‘spoilers’ post, which shows the places where treasure is hidden.
In an attempt to combat the rising rape epidemic in India, the India Times claims that three automobile engineers from Chennai have created GPS, SMS, and electro-shock enabled underwear, which will not only send an SMS with location to police and relatives in case of sexual abuse, but will also deliver an electric shock to the perpetrator. Given the extremely serious nature of the topic, and that the story was posted on March 31, I’m assuming that this isn’t, in fact, an April Fool’s gag, but it does sound a little… whacky.
Map projections! We all love them, I’m sure. And now, GIS Lounge notifies us of an animated Map Projection Visualisation that shows the many different map projections in ways that illustrate their differences. If you don’t already have a favourite projection, this is a good way to choose one – and really bump up your carto-geek status.
Last year, we reported that Scottish Ten were going to capture the Sydney Opera House in 3D. Well, the team are about to head over our way to begin the project, and CyArk has posted on its blog about their upcoming adventure.
