FOSS4G call for papers + maps

FOSS4G 2014

The organisers of the annual FOSS4G open source geospatial conference are calling for papers and maps.

The call for papers has been issued for both the academic and ‘regular’ streams.

For the regular stream, presentations may cover any aspect of the development and use of open source geospatial software, with the following topics given as a guide for topics that may interest attendees:

  • Case Studies: Relate your experiences
  • Benchmarks: Comparisons between packages
  • Business Cases: building the economic case
  • Visualisation: effective presentation of information
  • Disaster Response: software, case studies, outcomes
  • Development: new development in projects
  • Hacks and Mashes: novel solutions to all our problems
  • Collaboration: data collection, data sharing, and open standards
  • New data: handling new data models and formats (e.g. 3D, temporal and “big data”)

The FOSS4G 2014 academic track provides a strong basis for collaboration among researchers, developers, users, and practitioners carrying out research and development in the geospatial and the free and open source fields. Organisers are encouraging academic papers describing:

  • the use of open source geospatial software and data, in and for scientific research, as well as
  • academic endeavours to conceptualise, create, assess, and teach open source geospatial software and data.

In addition to these categories, there is also a number of themes (available here) under which to submit.

In addition to the calls for papers, there has also been a ‘call for maps’ for the FOSS4G Map Gallery. This Map Gallery will not only demonstrate the work of delegates, but also act as a reference point for the current state of mapping. All delegates are encouraged to share one example of their work, to help create a cartographic record of the FOSS4G 2014 conference.

Contributing to the FOSS4G Map Gallery is simple: make a map involving open source technology or open data, and share that map online! Details of the format and mechanism to share your work are provided on the FOSS4G call for maps page.


The annual FOSS4G conference is the largest global gathering focused on open source geospatial software. FOSS4G brings together developers, users, decision-makers and observers from a broad spectrum of organisations and fields of operation. Through six days of workshops, presentations, discussions, and cooperation, FOSS4G participants create effective and relevant geospatial products, standards, and protocols.

FOSS4G has been held all over the world and draws attendees from over 40 countries. Nottingham, England hosted the conference in 2013. In 2014, Portland, Oregon, USA will host FOSS4G’s tenth year.

FOSS4G will, as always, be the premier showcase event for new applications, projects, case studies, business perspectives and training for free and open source geospatial software.

In addition to catering to the existing FOSS4G community, attendance is being encouraged from anyone considering using open source and geospatial software for the first time.
