The annual NSW spatial excellence awards were held on November 8 attracting and rewarding a small but variegated set of organisations, projects and individuals that represent the range of endeavour and ingenuity within the spatial industry.

A tight-knit crowd of spatial professionals filled the Tudio 12 at Hoyts Entertainment Quarter to see accolades awarded to organisations and businesses in four categories: spatial innovation, spatial enablement, spatial export, and technical excellence. The Awards, run by the Spatial Industries Business Association (SIBA|GITA), celebrate the achievements of top spatial information enterprises.

SIBA|GITA CEO Deanna Hutchinson said that the calibre of entries speaks volumes about the New South Wales spatial industry.

“Many people don’t understand that spatial is ‘technology in place.’ It is a valuable business planning tool, infrastructure development tool and has huge impacts on the way Australians live their lives,” Hutchinson said.

Winners in their categories and judges’ comments are below.

Award for Innovation and Commercialisation: AAM and RDA Sydney — Virtual Sydney

Judges’ comments:
“This project is a strong example of spatial technology providing real world benefits. A new application of spatial data improves the ease and speed of land contamination assessments, while also providing cost savings compared to earlier methods. The submission demonstrates a comprehensive solution and additional capabilities, changing the reviews from responsive to allowing proactive attention. Jacobs is to be congratulated for the way this successful project highlights spatial capability.”

Award for Spatial Ablement: Jacobs — A new approach to contaminated land risk review using historical imagery and web GIS applications new approach to contaminated land risk

Judges’ comments:
“This project displays a very high level of both innovation and commercialisation. With its completion, it is clearly a “game changer” for all future infrastructure projects,  own planning and for the preparation and implementation of new development projects. Significantly, access, and manipulation of data are solved via the innovative platform, not to mention the  substantial benefit of affordability that AAM has provided for this Sydney model.”

Award for Technical Excellence: Land Surveys — Sydney CBD and South East Light Rail

Judges’ comments:
“Retrofitting urban infrastructure can be a complex task and this project required not only precise surveying and mapping but also precise coordination with a multitude of utilities and utility owners. With the use of spatial technologies Land Surveys very efficiently and expertly handled the many unexpected surprises this project presented.”

Award for Export: Open Spatial Pty Limited — Open Spatial Enlighten web distribution software

Judges’ comments:
“Enlighten is a 100 per cent Australian designed product giving users reliable access to diverse data sources for smarter planning and management. Enlighten is exported  through subsidiary offices to the USA, Africa and the Pacific Islands to customers ranging from universities and telecom utilities to public work authorities. Enlighten recognised the importance of language to market uptake and made adjustments to support a variety of regional standards to overcome a key export barrier.”

The winners of the New South Wales Individual Spatial Excellence Awards, hosted by SIBA|GITA and the Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute (SSSI), will be announced on December 6th in Bathurst.
