Consultants and contractors are sought for this project to predict, measure and analyse the wind potential at Stewart Island. The objective is to gauge its appropriateness as a renewable source for electricity generation for the Stewart Island Electrical Supply Authority network.  The work includes preliminary desktop analysis to prepare a short-list of potential sites, erection of site monitoring equipment at one site and monitoring it for a 12 month period, and preparing an analysis of the results.

These are designed to accelerate the recovery in Canterbury by increasing the ability of agencies to share and use location-based information to plan and coordinate critical recovery and rebuild activities.

9 April: CSIRORFT2013014; RV Investigator Satellite Communication Systems; CSIRO [Aust]. The Future Research Vessel Project is an initiative of the Australian government under the Super Science Initiative with support from the Education Investment Fund. It is part of the Australia’s Marine National Facility, a blue-water research capability funded by the government and operated by the CSIRO. It is a multi-purpose ocean-going marine research vessel, designed to adapt to and support a broad range of sophisticated scientific activities by multi-disciplinary teams engaged in climate, atmospheric, oceanographic, biological and geoscientific research. The ship’s digital communication system consists of a VoIP PABX system for internal communications linked to a satellite system for off-ship communications including voice, email, internet, scientific data transfer, video hook-ups, and remote support. The satellite communication system will consist of a high bandwidth, always-on primary system together with a smaller secondary global satellite communication system to provide redundancy.
