VANZI 2014

The Digital Built Environment will ultimately comprise millions of 3D Building, Spatial and Legal Object Models that specify the Physical Attributes, AND all Rights, Responsibilities and Restrictions applying to each piece of ‘property’, from: building components to entire structures, cities, states and nations.

The VANZI-buildingSMART Australasia Conference 2014 is about the strategies we must employ to reap the benefits, mitigate the risks and overcome the challenges involved in making this vision of an ‘integrated virtual world’, a reality.

It will be held on 15-16 September, 2014 at the Australian Technology Park in Sydney.

Jointly promoted by buildingSMART Australasia (bSA) and the Virtual Australia and New Zealand Initiative (VANZI), with the Spatial Industries Business Association (SIBA) a major supporter.

All digital modelling technologies are evolving at an astounding rate, allowing us to create full 3D representations of both new and existing urban structures (inside and out, above and below ground) that are embedded with information about their appearance, function and performance – challenging the way that we design, build and manage the real world.

This conference brings together leading industry associations, their members and clients who are using these technologies to drive change across the Australian and New Zealand built environment.

Importantly, it provides an opportunity to learn about the specific initiatives being undertaken locally and internationally. Much of the technology required to make this a reality already exists in the marketplace and is being widely adopted by all levels of industry and government.

This conference will report on the latest user, industry and research-driven initiatives to address two critical aspects of this new ‘virtual infrastructure’:

  • the systems and open standards required to facilitate integration and distribution of the information models, particularly from a BIM and Spatial/Point Cloud perspective.
  • a framework for ‘certification of data’, ‘authentication of users’ and ‘authorisation of access’ – having regard to each person’s rights, responsibilities and restrictions in the real world.

The aim is to ensure that the processes we have in the 2D world (such as signed paper plans) are translated effectively into the 3D world – within a common legal framework across all jurisdictions.

This does not mean changing the laws and procedures that relate to real property, or to approval processes. It does mean collaborating to ensure the laws and processes that apply to the emerging virtual world are uniform – so we don’t repeat the ‘rail gauges’ problem of last century.

In this regard, the conference will also share learnings from each of the VANZ ‘pilot’ projects/workgroups (from across a number of jurisdictions), that are examining the challenges involved in integrating Building and Spatial Models with 3D Legal Objects, within a secure environment – for all property purposes.

Who should attend?

Senior management – to understand the business strategy-changing nature of these emerging technologies, along with
technical specialists – to advise senior management in the development of operational objectives.

Only by understanding the opportunity, and the benefits, risks and challenges involved, can we take full advantage of these transformational technologies and processes.

No matter what role you play in the Architectural Engineering and Construction (AEC) and Property sectors, whether you work in the Private sector, or Local, State or Federal Government, or are involved in any way in the Digital Economy as it relates to the natural and built environment, this conference is not be missed.
